After a long wait the Apple iPhone 3GS finally arrived on the 19th of June to far less acclaim than anticipated as these pictures from Engadget Mobile show…

The reasons for the poor queues could be attributed to several factors including the current state of the economy, the high cost of an upgrade and the fact the market might just be saturated. If you did go out and brave the baying mobs to get your hands on a 3GS, we’d love to know what you think of it.

Rob Shoesmith Website Now Live

The website of Rob Shoesmith is now live and accessible for all those who wish to follow Rob’s amazing story. If you are unaware, Rob is the binman from the midlands who won a competition to have his iPhone app idea developed by a US firm of software developers. Rob’s idea was picked out of around 12000 entries and should be in the iTunes store by August.

If the app is successful Rob could make a tidy fortune as he will get to keep 25% of all the profits made. You can follow Rob’s great story on Twitter where his username is shoesmith81, at his new blog, on YouTube and of course here at Touchscreen Fones.

Concerns Over Mobile Phone Directory

There are fears that a proposed mobile phone directory service which goes live next week will infring upon the privacy of mobile phone owners throughout the UK. The service is said to be able to locate any one of the country’s 42 million mobile phone numbers for a charge of £1 at 118800.co.uk. Users can also call the service, much like a normal directory enquiries service, and ask to be connected to the mobile phone of a chosen person, however, the service first calls that mobile and asks the owner permission before the call is connected.

All of the information held on the system has been acquired from market research, a popular practice in the telecoms and indeed other industries whereby personal details of consumers can be bought and used by third parties for their own purposes.

It is possible to opt out of the service if you do not wish your number to be included on the service but to do so you must contact the service and inform them of your desire to be excluded. Of course, you will be charged your standard network rate for the privilege of asking to have your privacy respected.

LG GD910 Wristphone Hits These Shores In July

LG confirmed this week that their ultra futuristic but very familiar (too many Bond films?) wristwatch phone, the DG910, will be hitting  Europe very shortly and will be possibly be in stores in the UK by July. Something of a concept phone of fantasy, the LG DG910 is of course has touchscreen capabilities and video call functionality and should be available via Orange and Carphone Warehouse at a price of around £1000…..yes you read that correctly, one thousand pounds.

Nokia N97 Update!

For those of who are eagerly awaiting the release of perhaps the most hotly anticipated mobile phone of the year, news has reached TSF that N97 will be with us very shortly indeed. As proof, Nokia have posted a video over at Nokia Conversations of workers at their factory in Finland assembling and preparing the phones for dispatch.

Nokia are said to expect around 10million of these phones to be sold. When talking to Bloomberg, Nokia’s VP Jonas Geust said that the N97 “should not be a niche product, and comprising the best elements of touchscreen and QWERTY it looks sure to be a success. It will have some touch competition however with the impending release of the Palm Pre and the rumoured updated iPhone.
