Over the past few years Nokia became the leader on the mobile phone market. Thankfully for its innovative designs and feature rich products it is one of the most desirable mobile brands.

One of the flagship models in the multimedia N series is the N97. The N series were designed to be a multimedia accessory capable for music and video playback with a superior camera. Over the few new series the N design became richer with a GPS capability and today it represents complete multimedia solutions for both younger and business users.

The newest addition in the N series in the N97. Observing the design only we can notice that the shape of the N97 is much like the Apple iPhone. But only at first glance, if we take a second look we can see that the Nokia N97 has a full slider Qwerty keyboard. This is a really new thing in the N series, the only Nokia’s which had Qwerty keyboards were the Communicator series. They were a business class which evolved to the E series but the full keyboard was left out on most of the devices.

Like with all the Nokia products this device is also made of top quality materials. Under the hood, the N97 is a very powerful phone, it has a large touch screen display plenty of memory and the latest Symbian operating system.

The display is a 16 million color touch screen display and its resolution is 360×640 and it guarantees a sharp and colorful picture. The newest Symbian works with a touchscreen capability so we can use this feature for most of the time. If we want to write a longer text message or e-mail we can slide the phone and use the convenience of the full qwerty keyboard.

The N97 phone features a 5 Megapixels camera with auto-focus and flash. This mobile camera is one of the best in this category. The camera can also record video in 640×480 VGA resolution. There are a lot of storage space where we can save our photos or videos. The N97 have an impressive 32GB of free storage space and it can be additionally expanded with memory cards. It supports micro SD ( TransFlash ) up to 16 GB. So we do not have to worry about storage space there is really a plenty of it available.

As for the connectivity, the N97 supports the following technologies : GPRS, EDGE, HDSPA. Besides this it has a built in WiFi and GPS. Also we can get connected with the help of Bluetooth technology.

The connectivity to the computers and laptops is solved with a standard USB 2.0 and with the well known and well functioning Nokia software which come on the installation CD.

Anyone who is looking for a well rounded multimedia telephone the new N97 is the answer. It is one of the most expensive mobiles today but its worth the price. It is one of the most powerful phones on the market.

For those of who are eagerly awaiting the release of perhaps the most hotly anticipated mobile phone of the year, news has reached TSF that N97 will be with us very shortly indeed. As proof, Nokia have posted a video over at Nokia Conversations of workers at their factory in Finland assembling and preparing the phones for dispatch.

Nokia are said to expect around 10million of these phones to be sold. When talking to Bloomberg, Nokia’s VP Jonas Geust said that the N97 “should not be a niche product, and comprising the best elements of touchscreen and QWERTY it looks sure to be a success. It will have some touch competition however with the impending release of the Palm Pre and the rumoured updated iPhone.

Some of you might know that this week saw the launch of Nokia’s new and eagerly awaited online software application store entitled Ovi, which my very good Finnish tells me is indeed Finnish for ‘door’. Obviously the intention of this new venture is to rival that of the iPhone app store, but do Nokia have a case?

The overwhelming populartity of applications or “apps” is something that Apple are no strangers to of course, having witnessed a whopping 1 billion application downloads worldwide in less than a year, now many other manufacturers and software developers are keen to get a look in. Those in the know, however, have been saying that it is highly unlikely any other manufacturers or developers will be able to repeat this success due to a lack of applications, marketing, relevant knowledge and inablity to compete with the already well established competition.

“Nokia’s Ovi store is a step in the right direction but Apple is still the king of the hill when it comes to selling applications,” said Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight.

In Nokia’s defense, what they are doing is actually a pretty smart, if plucky venture. The fact of the matter is, they are trying to diversify and explore other rvenue streams by providing services and products for existing customers in a saturated and declining market. That said, previous ventures such as N-Gage and Comes With Music proved to be…well, not so successful. We hope that Ovi store does well and considering Nokia is without doubt the largest manufacturer of mobile phones, selling in excess of 400 million phones a year compared to Apples 20 million, we believe the Ovi store can be a success.

The last time we checked Ovi had only been accessible to a handful of users of Nokia phones in Australia and Singapore, although it was mooted that the store would be globally accessible by the end of this week. If any of you have or are intending to use Ovi to download its offerings which include music, maps and games, then we’d be very interested to hear about your experiences here at Touchscreen Fones.

You can check out what Ovi has to offer by heading over to the Nokia Ovi site.

With all the extensive and wonderful yet sometimes confusing array of features and functions that can be found on today’s smartphones, it’s difficult to know what exactly works best. For some of us, certain functions may take precedence or importance over others, it’s all very much a matter of personal opinions and requirements. Some of us for example may be of the opinion that having a QWERTY keyboard is of greater importance than having a touchscreen, whilst some of us may feel that the original numeric keyboard is better still, whilst others may think that voice command is their ideal phone feature.

The common thread that links all of the aforementioned features together is data input methods or interfaces. Your preference of course could depend on many things, such as whether you as a user are predominantly a texter, or a caller or whether you simply don’t have the use of your digits all or most of the time. What is my point? Read on.

The good folks over at Nokia Conversations have devised a poll to establish which data input interface is the preferred one amongst mobile phone users. From the results thus far (voting is still ongoing) they have identified the combination of the touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard configuration as being the most desirable combination. This is good news for the people at Nokia who will at some point (date rumoured to be mid 2009) be releasing the much anticipated Nokia N97. You might think that Nokia would have conducted such stealthy research before manufacturing another significant model….but who are we to tell them how to do things?

For more information on the poll and to register your vote while the poll is still ongoing, head over to Nokia Conversions or click the image above.

Have Nokia missed the boat? After all, touchscreen mobile phones have been released by just about everybody at this stage, so surely Nokia’s late initial entry into the market will have to be a bit special to grab people’s attention. Of course, there’s no way Nokia is too late, as there are many potential touchscreen phone users waiting only for their device before taking the plunge! But is it special enough to steal some customers away from Samsung, LG and perhaps even Apple in addition to the Nokia die-hards who will buy it anyway? Let’s take a closer look and see exactly why this could be the case!

When you first pick up the 5800, you’ll be surprised to feel it’s nowhere near as wide as many of its competitors, it really feels like a regular Nokia candybar, despite the big screen and lack of keypad. This is a considerable advantage when looking at the wide bodied iPhone 3G or Samsung Omnia, it also feels well-built and the 109 gram weight ensures it feels properly planted in your palm. The design may not be inspired, but it’s by no means unattractive, meaning you’ll want to wipe the inevitable finger prints off to keep it looking nice!

Why You Should Buy The 5800
A 3.2″ touchscreen displaying a resolution of 360×640 and 16 million colours!
The latest 5th Edition Symbian S60 operating system, especially adapted for finger control.
The XpressMusic tag should tell you the 5800 is a great music phone, and it really is!
A 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual-LED flash.
Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps installed.
