The impressive LG Arena is set to be LG’s flagship mobile phone for 2009 and instead of debuting it at Mobile World Congress 2009, LG let it bask in the limelight a week or so before, so everyone could get a really good look without being sidetracked by something else shiny in the next booth. Was it worth it? Absolutely! Leaving aside the screen for a moment, the reason we should be so excited about the LG Arena is its use of the brand new user interface LG have developed named S-Class, seen here for the first time.

Features

8GB internal memory

5 Megapixel Camera

3″ Touchscreen display

3G (HSPDA), EDGE, GPRS and Wi-Fi technology

HSDPA packet data service with a maximum transmission rate of 7.2Mbps

Built-in GPS

DivX/Xvid player

Document Viewer

MP3 Player

FM Radio

microSD Card Slot (TransFlash) (up to 16GB)

Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email, Instant Messaging

Dimensions: 105.9 x 55.3 x 12 mm

Weight: 105 grams

Standby Time: Up to 300hrs

Talk Time: Up to 3hrs 50mins

Why You Should Buy the LG Arena!

This is a touch interface and in a similar way to HTC, uses a 3D graphical ‘cube’ to access all the phone’s features but doesn’t throw you into the depths of Windows Mobile once you select an icon! Instead you are presented with a vertically scrolling rolodex style menu which you ‘rotate’ with your finger if you pick multimedia, a home screen-style page and a more familiar 3×3 grid of icons elsewhere. A main screen exists which can be used instead of the cube and provides total phone access including less often used features. The large screen has plenty of space for icons and can even be used in landscape mode for even more. Best of all, the cube’s content will be customisable and everything looks fast, responsive and packed with great little animated touches.

Make no mistake, the LG Viewty, despite the unusual name, is a whole lot of high-tech loveliness stuffed inside the current handset style-of-choice; the touchscreen monolith! Yes, under the hood you’ll find an auto-focus 5 megapixel camera, video shooting at both 30fps VGA and 120fps QVGA and 3G with HSDPA connectivity. The Viewty is one serious camera phone.

Features

The Viewty has an excellent 3” touchscreen, with haptic feedback!

Take very high quality pictures using the 5 megapixel, autofocus camera with strobe flash. A second lens on the front panel is used for 3G video calls.

Shoot and then edit videos with the comprehensive video editing suite built-in.

Just about every connection available can be found in the Viewty; choose from 3G, HSDPA, GPRS, EDGE and a 2.0 USB socket too.

TV-Out socket for watching slideshows or video playback.

Is it a Phone? Is it a Camera?

No, it’s the LG Viewty; a terminal case of a mobile phone which thinks it’s a proper digital camera. Leave the Viewty face down on a table and people will mistake it for one, making it clear LG planned for their range-topper to blur the line even further than it has been before. Thankfully, the pictures taken with that 5 megapixel lens are very high quality, vibrant and detail rich. There are many options to choose from when taking pictures, with everything from white balance and colour tone adjustment to a timer to be found.

The video shooting ability of the Viewty is as impressive as the still performance. Switchable between 30fps VGA and 120fps QVGA, the fun really begins once you have finished filming, as LG have excelled themselves with the editing features. Adding scrolling text, little effects and music tracks is simple and adds a whole new dimension to a regular camera phone. It’ll keep you occupied for ages!

Touch Me!

The LG Viewty is slightly larger than the other well known LG touchscreen phone, the Prada, but it does share some of its software including the fish that swims around the screen and responds to your touch. The interface has been overhauled and is faster and feels more precise than the Prada, plus the inclusion of haptic feedback improves the experience greatly. Even the photo gallery has been enhanced, with photos able to be shuffled around the screen with your finger!

Using the Viewty for more mundane, everyday operations is pleasurable too, something enhanced by the comprehensive array of connection methods. Fast internet is never far away thanks to the 3G and HSDPA options, while a document viewer, expandable memory and organiser make sure the Viewty is practical too. An MP3 player with DivX video option completes the package.

Summary of the LG Viewty

The Viewty is an outstanding camera phone which instead of skimping on other features, packs as many as possible into a slim, attractive casing complete with the ultimate in interface coolness; the touchscreen.

Watch out for the LG Viewty Smart, the LG successor for the popular KU990, which features the new sleek and smooth S-class touch interface with multi-touch, 3″ Touchscreen, an 8 Megapixel Camera, A-GPS and a host of connectivity features.

Have Nokia missed the boat? After all, touchscreen mobile phones have been released by just about everybody at this stage, so surely Nokia’s late initial entry into the market will have to be a bit special to grab people’s attention. Of course, there’s no way Nokia is too late, as there are many potential touchscreen phone users waiting only for their device before taking the plunge! But is it special enough to steal some customers away from Samsung, LG and perhaps even Apple in addition to the Nokia die-hards who will buy it anyway? Let’s take a closer look and see exactly why this could be the case!

Features

3.2″ TFT Touchscreen

Symbian OS v9.4, Series 60 rel. 5

3G (HSDPA), EDGE, GPRS, HSCSD, Wi-Fi and UPnP technology

3.2 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics

Proximity sensor for auto turn-off

Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate

Built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS function

Nokia Maps 2.0 Touch

microSD Card Slot (TransFlash) (up to 16GB)

3.5mm headphone jack

TV-Out

Stereo FM radio with RDS and MP3 Player

Dimensions: 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm

Weight: 109 grams

Standby Time: Up to 406hrs

Talk Time: Up to 8hrs 45mins

When you first pick up the 5800, you’ll be surprised to feel it’s nowhere near as wide as many of its competitors, it really feels like a regular Nokia candybar, despite the big screen and lack of keypad. This is a considerable advantage when looking at the wide bodied iPhone 3G or Samsung Omnia, it also feels well-built and the 109 gram weight ensures it feels properly planted in your palm. The design may not be inspired, but it’s by no means unattractive, meaning you’ll want to wipe the inevitable finger prints off to keep it looking nice!

Why You Should Buy The 5800
A 3.2″ touchscreen displaying a resolution of 360×640 and 16 million colours!
The latest 5th Edition Symbian S60 operating system, especially adapted for finger control.
The XpressMusic tag should tell you the 5800 is a great music phone, and it really is!
A 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual-LED flash.
Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps installed.
The 5800 XpressMusic is a 3G device with HSDPA support.
Using a tweaked TouchWiz operating system previously seen on the Samsung Tocco, the M8800 may not have smartphone credentials but it remains easy to use, finger friendly and suitably powerful. All this would mean little if the Pixon didn’t have the features, however this phone manages to pack everything from SRS Virtual Surround Sound to GPS in!

Why You Should By the Pixon
The Pixon sports a beautiful 3.2″ touchscreen with a resolution of 240×320 and the ability to display 256,000 colours, it’s a resistive item so Samsung have included a stylus in the box to assist, however this is attached to a lanyard rather than hiding away in its own little slot on the casing, Not to worry though, as the screen is nicely responsive and the TouchWiz system provides sensibly sized options for easy finger pressing.

Of course, the standout feature of the Pixon is the excellent 8 megapixel camera. The lens is housed inside a raised circular section on the rear panel and has the usual flash, autofocus and video shooting (at a healthy 30fps WVGA) capabilities. To reinforce its camera-first, phone-second reputation, the Pixon has many features found on a regular point-and-shoot camera such as auto-panorama, face/smile and blink detection and an advanced shake reduction setting. All this adds up to the Pixon taking pictures filled with colour and detail, with a sharpness unaffected by over-zealous in-camera software enhancements.

The media side of the Pixon is also very impressive. The wide screen lends itself perfectly to playing videos and the onboard player is set up to play most of the popular file types including DivX, XviD, H.264 and MP4. The music player has the same level of versatility and like may other of the Pixon’s special features can be accessed by one of the clever widgets which are dragged from the sidebar on to the main home screen, making it unnecessary to dig about inside the menu system. A 3.5mm jack plug adaptor, TV-out and the unusual virtual surround sound cement the Pixon’s claim to being a full-on mobile media powerhouse.

Rounding out the feature set on the Pixon is the Assisted GPS receiver, MicroSD card slot for a memory increase, an accelerometer which amongst other things, makes viewing your photo album a lot more fun than usual and an FM RDS radio. The Pixon’s 3G HSDPA connection returns excellent data speeds, however the lack of Wi-Fi is a shame.

Summary of the Samsung M8800 Pixon.
Supposedly the little brother of the Samsung INNOV8, the Pixon more than holds it own in the range thanks to brilliant music and video, excellent build quality mixing metal and plastic, the responsive and innovative TouchWiz and of course, the mighty 8 megapixel camera. The M8800 Pixon is another great high-tech media mobile from Samsung.

The original Armani may have pre-dated it, but the Tocco F480 was the model where Samsung came of touchscreen age. Although they both share similar looks, the Armani’s innovative but flawed Croix interface has been dumped in favour of the far more user-friendly TouchWiz system, which is also found on the Pixon. In fact, thinking of the Tocco as a Pixon-lite wouldn’t be far off the mark, as it gives the 8 megapixel monster a serious run for its money!

Features

Why You Should Buy The Tocco!

Created using glossy plastic and shiny metal, this 100 gram, 11mm thick handset is a thing of beauty!

A 5 megapixel camera lens can be found on the rear of the handset.

It’s a 3G handset with 7.2Mbps HSDPA support.

An FM RDS radio plus a music and video player for entertainment.

The main attraction of the Samsung Tocco has to be its touchscreen. It’s a 2.8″ screen with a resolution of 240×320 and although that may sound a little small for a touchscreen device, it does the job perfectly well thanks to its brightness and sharp colours. This is the first Samsung to feature the TouchWiz interface, a clever little system which consists of a sidebar on your main screen filled with widgets. Dragging these widgets from the sidebar on to the main screen with your finger activates them, displaying everything from a clock to your music player and making it a quick job to activate your favourite features. The Tocco also has haptic feedback.
