Touchscreen Market Revenues To Reach $9bn By 2015

Posted on: May 25, 2009 by admin

Our regular readers will know that here at TSF we just love to bring you the very latest news concerning the growth of the touchscreen phone market because we firmly believe that such an innovation can only become a massive success and will prove to be as much of an integrated part of our lives as, well, the last massive success. TSF also believes that like all innovative technologies, over time retail prices will become lower, leading to increased accessibility, which will ultimately translate into increased sales figures.

Every now and then different establishments confirm TSF’s beliefs by releasing mouth watering statistics about the growth of the industry or sales of handsets (see Samsung & LG posts), and now market researchers DisplaySeacrh have gone and done just that.
DisplaySearch specialise in providing research for display related industries and have been at the forefront of their field for over 10 years now. So it would seem that they are more than qualified to announce their forecast that the touchscreen module market will reach $9 billion by the year 2015, up from $3.6 billion in 2008, with a compound annual growth rate of 14%.

“Touch screens are becoming widespread due to the ease of use and intuitive interfaces they enable, which can save time and increase productivity. Falling prices have also spurred adoption. Finally, touch screen devices are now perceived as cool and fun,” noted Jennifer Colegrove, PhD, Director of Display Technologies at DisplaySearch. “Touch screen penetration has been rapidly increasing in mobile phones, portable navigation devices, gaming and other applications. Over the next several years, touch screens will undergo strong growth in large-size applications, such as retail, ticketing, point of information and education/training.”

Now, before we get too carried away, the term “touch screen modules” refers not only to mobile phones, but also to other technologies which are eligible for entry into the category, or basically, any other technology which comprises a touchscreen interface. All of these technologies from some 120 manufacturers were surveyed by DisplaySearch in order to compile their 2009 Touch Panel Market Analysis. That said, mobile phones are still the most popular application for touchscreen and account for a large number of sales and unit shipments. DisplaySearch’s takle on this is that the penetration rate for touchscreen technology in mobile phones will hit almost 40% by 2015.

There are at present around a dozen different classifications of touchscreen technology, with a capacitive (whereby electrical impulses from one’s fingers are used to ascertain its location on a screen) and resistive (where the physical pressing of the screen is used to ascertain the fingers location) being the two that are most relevant to mobile phones.
